Born on 22 March 1924, George Johnston was raised in Glasgow by his parents Margaret and James. At the age of 20, in 1944, George enlisted in the RAF. It was this same year that he married his sweetheart Cathy, with whom he had a son, Tom. They were married for 52 wonderful years until Cathy’s sad passing in 1996.

Fellow Cumbernauld member Elizabeth Buchanan explains, “George kept himself busy and remained social enjoying the events at his local branch of the Royal British Legion Scotland where he has been a member for over 50 years. George was lucky enough to meet his second wife Jean a few years later and they were married in 1999 at a ceremony in Dullatur Golf Club, where he was an active golfing member with his good pal Jackie Duncan.”

Jean brought her two adult daughters Anna and Sheena into the family and with Tom they led a very happy and fulfilled life. Sadly, Jean and Anna are no longer with us, but Sheena and Tom continue to do a terrific job of making sure George remains independent in his own home in Seafar, Cumbernauld.

George has also remained a valued member of the Legion Scotland branch in Cumbernauld. Elizabeth adds, “I am sure myself and anyone who knows George will agree when I say he is a true gentleman.”

A special celebration is to be held on 20 March at Legion Scotland Cumbernauld club, from 1pm. In attendance will be local members, representatives of Legion Scotland and the local Lord Provost office.
