The D-Day landings marked the beginning of France, and Europe’s, liberation towards the end of the Second World War. Charities and organisations are already beginning to plan their commemorations for such an important anniversary, and several events are being organised to celebrate peace, liberty and reconciliation.

International

Among the key commemorations will be a festival, devised by Normandy’s authorities, which will be geared towards people of all ages from France and beyond. Fireworks will light up the skies over the five landing beaches in the lead-up to the anniversary. An international ceremony on 6 June will bring together heads of state, veterans and officials.

And, beginning in May, the D-Day Festival will be held across Normandy. This will include cultural events, historical re-enactments, parades, concerts and parachute displays. You can find out more here.

National

Legion Scotland are currently finalising plans for an event that will commemorate and celebrate the historical importance of D-Day. Full details will be released soon, so please do keep your eye out for more information.

In the meantime, we would like to hear from any D-Day veterans, for this event and other happenings. If you know of any such veterans from your community, please contact Head Office so that due arrangements can be made.

Local

We would also like to know what plans, if any, are being made at branches across Scotland. This is so that we can share the information with members via the magazine and monthly e-bulletin. Please contact [email protected] with any information on the plans you have for D-Day 2024.
