While a busy summer may now be approaching its end, there’s still much to look forward to in the weeks and months ahead. Here are just a few of the key Legion Scotland moments between now and the end of the year.

Best Kept War Memorial

Our annual celebration of the hard work that goes into preserving and maintaining the nation’s war memorials is just around the corner. As we speak, the national judging is taking place, with the finalists of each Legion Scotland area up for consideration.

The winners will be announced on 8 September in a trophy presentation at New Haig House. Best of luck to all those in the running.

Legion Scotland Today magazine

The autumn issue of Legion Scotland Today will arrive on your doorstep in the first half of October. Expect the usual mix of updates from across the organisation, and from Poppyscotland, as well as stories about some of the new initiatives launched by local branches in recent times.

Remembrance Gardens opening

In late October, the Gardens of Remembrance will be dedicated in Inverness, Edinburgh and Glasgow. These important ceremonies – which are attended by representatives of government, the Armed Forces, service charities and other veterans’ groups – officially set into motion a period of Remembrance that culminates a few weeks later.

Remembrance is marked across the country

On 11 November, and Remembrance Sunday which falls on 12 November this year, there will be a series of events at a local and national level. All are welcome to join the service of Remembrance being delivered by Legion Scotland at the Scott Monument in Edinburgh at 10.52am on 11 November. The ceremony will involve the firing of Edinburgh Castle’s cannon and a two minute silence, followed by the laying of wreaths.

The festive season approaches…

It feels far too early to mention the annual holiday celebrated on 25 December by name, but you may wish to pencil in 10 December for the annual carol service. It’s due to be held at Canongate Kirk at 4pm, with tickets available through Eventbrite nearer the time.
