In May, Montrose Branch President Ron Blacklaws celebrated his 90th birthday. Ron spent the day with his daughters, Pauline and Rhona, and their husbands, who had all travelled from Australia and South Africa for the special occasion.

After a meal out, the group headed to the Legion Scotland club for a drink before going home. Little did Ron know that a surprise was in store: all his friends and family had gathered to celebrate his big day. Ron was delighted that so many had made the effort to celebrate with him and his family.

Ron, who hails from Johnshaven, served as a bombardier in the Royal Artillery and continued his service in the Territorial Army, totalling 17 years of service. He had many occupations after he left the forces and spent the last 25 years of his working life with the hydro board.

He joined the Montrose branch of Legion Scotland in 1955 when the premises were in Queen Street, and has been a proud and loyal member serving the branch in many roles. To name but a few, he has been property convener, parade commander, vice chairman, barman, a member on various committees and was appointed branch president in 2020.

Ron has and continues to play an important part of the Montrose branch, always willing to help, give advice and takes on his role as president with great enthusiasm and pride.
