Even though many Legion Scotland branches and clubs maintain busy social calendars, getting new or one-off events up and running can still be a bit of a challenge. With so much cancelled or postponed in 2020, perhaps your branch is thinking hard about what you can or should do this December. Here are some ideas:

  1. Breakfast clubs

A number of branches already host a breakfast club at a frequency that works for them. While many people are busy with their families at this time of year, some can be left very isolated, so it’s an ideal time to make sure you’re giving veterans, especially those who may live alone, a chance to get together. Breakfast clubs can be low-key, informal and accessible for those who might be turned off by the bigger Christmas festivities.

  1. To party or not to party?

This year there may be tricky decisions to be made about what is the best way to party over Christmas. To keep your members safe you may want to think about ventilation in your venue, limiting numbers, and avoiding any buffet-style food. You may also want to consider whether you wish to put any rules or guidelines in place in terms of requiring, for example, a negative lateral flow test for attendees. Perhaps consult members about what they would prefer to do, and consider a number of smaller events.

  1. Christmas day

Christmas Day itself can be a lonely day for many, so if you don’t already know who will be spending Christmas alone, it would be great to find out and figure out what you can do to keep their Christmas bright. This could be hosting a meal in your club or having a rota of volunteers popping in to visit members at home.

  1. Check in with the local community

Many branches and their members have connections to other local community groups (including churches) who will likely have their own packed calendars over the festive season. Perhaps some members would like to attend these other events together? Or you may have a noticeboard that could hold posters and leaflets to let your members know what else is happening – whether it’s carolling, a Christingle service or the local Christmas lights switch-on.

  1. You tell us!

Legion Scotland branches have been holding great events, supporting veterans in need and connecting with their local communities for a whole century. We’d love to know what you have planned, which events are most successful for you, and to hear all about how your festivities go. Let us know at [email protected]
