Legion Scotland are partners with the charity Fields in Trust (operational name for the National Playing Fields Association) in delivering an ambitious programme called Centenary Fields.

Centenary Fields, launched by Fields in Trust President The Duke of Cambridge, will remember the sacrifices made by so many during Word War 1 whilst looking to the health and well-being of future generations. By protecting local green spaces with connections to WW1 we can create a nationwide legacy in this, the centenary of that war.

Local Legion branches can assist by identifying parks, playing fields or green spaces with links to WW1 in their area and contacting their local Council, Councillor and Veterans Champion urging them to designate that space a Centenary Field. That designation will ensure that the site will be forever a green space and it will be provided with a Centenary Field plaque to mark that.

Sites chosen thus far include:

• A former WW1 air base that’s now a park.
• A park that has allotments that were developed during WW1 as a consequence of foot shortages.
• Parks with WW1 memorials.
• Parks that are used for annual commemoration events.

Legion branches are being urged to get involved to ensure there is a Centenary Field and thus a lasting legacy from WW1 in their communities.
