Best Kept War Memorial Competition 2024

As the custodians of Remembrance in Scotland, Legion Scotland place great importance on ensuring our membership and volunteers contribute to the upkeep and publicity surrounding our many war memorials across the country.

Since 2018 we have seen more than 100 entries annually and the competition continues to grow in popularity.

We have 9 categories to be competed in:

• Champion of Champions this is chosen from the best Memorial from all entries
• Large Community with Gardens
• Large Community without Gardens
• Small Community with Gardens
• Small Community without Gardens
• Satellite Memorials with Gardens
• Satellite Memorials without Gardens
• New Entry (Memorials that have never been entered before)
• National All Categories (all non-members welcomed to enter all entries in this category should be adopted by the local branch who will give them guidance on the way the competition is run)
• Best Improved (Judged based on the previous year’s scores and current years scores and will apply to all memorials entered at area level

Timeline

The competition is launched at the start of each year and once all entries are confirmed they are judged at a local level across Areas with the finalists of each Area put forward for National judging over the summer.

Completed entry deadline - 26th of April

Area judging - 10th May to the 12th July

National judging - 19th of July to the 16th of August

The trophy presentation - 6th of September at New Haig House.

Why should you enter?

This is great way to build awareness of the those remembered on the memorial and bolster the comradeship in the local community. The competition is open to all who wish to enter, not just Legion Branches/members and we encourage community groups and younger participants to get involved.
