Dear Diary,

It was a normal day, or so I thought. I got up, I took a warm shower, I had eggs and bacon for breakfast, I was about to go to work and turned on the wireless. What I next heard from Neville Chamberlain made my jaw drop. I only remember him saying, “Britain is at war with Germany”.

Dear Diary,

After a few miserable days of panic and not leaving the house, I heard a loud knock on the door. Panic shot through my body. Who was it? Was it someone coming to take us somewhere safer? Or was it a German trooper coming to kill us? I got my strength up and opened the door, there was a tall man saying it wasn’t safe for my kids (Alice and Thomas) to live in Edinburgh anymore and they were going to be evacuated. I was absolutely devastated by the news.

I woke my wife and kids up. My kids asked me, “Why are you crying Daddy?” I replied, “Well… you know how World War 2 was declared?” “Yeah” answered Thomas. “Well… it isn’t safe here in Edinburgh.” “What? Why?” asked Alice. With tears slowly trickling down my cheeks I replied, “Because cities are usually the first place where wars start and Edinburgh is a city, but don’t worry you won’t… you won’t be living in Edinburgh anymore”. I can still remember the look on Alice’s face when she heard that, it was heartbreaking.

I walked into the living room to tell my wife the news. She was already miserable from the news about the war. When I told her she just sank into the couch.

Yours sincerely, Liam Andrew McNamee
